Item Creation Step 3 – Attributes, TAGs & Keywords
Attributes
Attributes are item class specific. You will have different attributes to populate, based on which item class you are choosing in the Categorization step. Sears Marketplace has three types of attributes:
- Required: A must-have attribute required for your product to be online
- Variation: An attribute that can only be used when we are creating variations or only if the variation option is available on Sears, as they will have predefined values like color or size or weight.
- Important Attribute: Attributes that are used when Members are searching Sears.com for a product and wish to narrow down their search results
- Optional Attributes: These attributes are like additional information that the seller might want to provide to a customer who purchases and item on Sears.
Attribute values can be free text or they can be pre-determined. The pre-determined attribute values will have a drop down and the free text will have the text “Enter attribute value”.
Why Are Some Attributes Important?
When creating items sellers may notice some attributes marked as Important. The primary reason most attributes are required is to take advantage of Dynamic Linking.
- Dynamic Linking is a site linking based on an attribute-value combination. This uses an attribute value to dictate where products will appear on the site
- For example, all Flat Panel TVs with a Type attribute value of LCD are directed to the LCD TVs subcategory; those with a Type attribute value of LED are directed to the LED TVs subcategory, etc.
- Another example: We may want to use several attributes of a piece of jewelry to display in different ways on the site: by Metal, by Stone Shape, by Stone Color, etc. Dynamic linking allows you to do this easily.
Please see below for some additional examples.
Item Class [darkTable][/darkTable]ID | Item Class | Attribute ID | Attribute Name | Reason Attribute is Required |
2689 | Lawn & Garden|Outdoor Power Equipment|Handheld Power Tools|Chain Saws – Gas | 292501 | CARB Compliant | This attribute is used to help customers in California determine if the product meets California Air Resource Board standards. |
3257 | Tools|Painting & Staining Supplies|Wall Borders | 876010 | Application Type | This attribute determines if the wall borders should also be included in the wall decals/appliques or wallpapers subcategories (i.e. if they are the self-adhesive/peel and stick type, they will be included with wall decals/appliques; if they are the glue or paste variety, they will be included with wallpaper) |
868 | Health & Beauty|Beauty|Nails|Nail Polish | 873710 | Application Type | This attribute determines if a “Sticker” or nail applique gets included in the nail stickers subcategory. If a seller has a product that is a nail sticker/applique and do not populate this attribute, the product will not appear in the correct subcategory. |
4843 | Bed Bath & Home|Home Decor|Rugs|Area Rugs | 1212 | Indoor/Outdoor | This attribute determines if the product gets included in the outdoor rugs subcategory under Lawn & Garden. If a product has this attribute applied as either “indoor/outdoor” or “outdoor” it will appear in both verticals- Outdoor Living and Bed Bath & Home. |
User interface (UI) view of Attributes:
The seller has to use the drop attributes that get auto populated per the category selected in the first step of categorization. There are fields that have drop downs and they are limited to the list provided in them.
While there are some files that do not have a drop down and that means free text and we can provide information about the item related to the field.

Bulk template view of Attributes
Please follow the instructions mentioned below when you prefer using bulk templates over the User Interface (UI). The set of instructions are about using a Generic template (one template for multiple categories) and also Item Class Specific template (category specific template)
Download the Template
Navigate to the Products >> Product Magt >> Bulk section of the seller portal. Once there, in Step 2: Browse Catalog by Item Class, you are able to select an Item Class Specific template, or a Generic template. If you already have items in your catalog that you would like to add attributes to, it is easiest to download the Item Class Specific template with items.
You will find 3 tabs within the Item Class template and 2 tabs in the Generic template.
Data Definition – this tab provides the data requirements for the fields listed on the Data Format tab. Please read this to understand the data validations and values allowed.
Data Format –the item information is placed in this tab (following the validations mentioned in the Data Definition tab).
Attributes (not present in Generic template) – this would list any attribute or value that is available for the specific template that you downloaded.
When using the Generic template, you will need to use the Item Class/Attributes Mapping (for Generic Template) file to determine what available Attribute Names & Values can be used in the attribute columns. You can add up to 30 different attributes.
Attributes are required to create variation items (same item with different size and/or color) and have them appear as a single item on the Sears.com site. If your item is a variation item, such as a t-shirt with different sizes and colors, you need to indicate this by using the Variation Group ID column with the same attributes completed for all applicable items, then select the appropriate variation attribute Names and Values.
The attribute type is provided in the Item Class/Attributes Mapping (for Generic Template). Complete at least one variation attribute field for all of the items in that Variation Group. The variation attribute fields can be found in the far right of the template. The values you enter under attribute fields have to be listed in the attributes tab in the template. When using the Generic template, the name for the attribute should be exactly as it is listed in the Item Class/Attributes Mapping (for Generic Template) for our system to accept your product successfully.
Several variation attributes of the same type are available to sellers within one item class. For example an item class may have up to 4 different size variation attributes, but sellers should use the attribute with the highest number (attribute ID) as this has the most comprehensive list of values.
Tags
The tags field is optional and any keywords entered here do not have impact on your search on the website. It can be used by sellers for their internal use to label items like “Back-to-School” or “Summer Catalog”.
Attributes on Sears have the functionality of enabling Search for an item that are mentioned in detail when we pick up attributes and values per each item per the category.
