Relevant Attributes

The more relevant attributes that are used for an item, the better visibility an item will have online.  Very few item classes have required attributes and attributes are currently optional for most item classes.  Setting the correct value for each attribute will improve your products’ chances of being purchased as most customers search and then use the narrow by feature on the left hand navigation panel.  Opting not to include attributes will prevent your items from showing in the narrowed by search results.

We encourage sellers to use the item class specific templates as all the attributes for an individual item class is listed there. If you are using an API or the generic templates, please use the following steps to help identify what attributes are associated with each item class/

To identify which attributes are required, important, or search do one of the following:

Download “Item Class/Attributes Mapping (for Generic Template)

Step 1: Log into the Seller Portal

Step 2: Browse to Products > Product Mgmt > Bulk

Step 3: Find the link “Item Class/Attributes Mapping (for Generic Template) and click to download it.

Step 4: Open the file to view all of the available Item Classes and the associated Attribute Names & Values for them.

Step 5: Using MS Excel (or your spreadsheet viewer of choice) turn on the filter so you may filter by column A (“Item Class ID”) or column B (“Item Class Path”)

Step 6: Filter to the specific item class ID

Column C (“Attribute”) shows the Account number and name of each associated attribute. For the API and generic template, use the number as the attribute ID. For example if 34101_Color Family is listed, use 34101 in the XML file.

Column D (“Attribute Type”) you will identify the different types for each attribute.

  • Search:  These attributes are required for an item to be in search results once a customer uses the narrow by feature.
  • Variation: These attributes are used when creating variation items.  Most common variation attributes are color & size.
  • Required: Required attributes are limited.  If you do not use a required attribute your item will not be created and will not go online.

Column E (“Free Text”) indicates if you can add your text (yes) or must use our predefined options (no)

Column F (“Multiple Choice)”

Column G (“Trademark”) is associated with variations and indicates you can add your custom color name to this

Column H (“Attribute Values”) is a list of the allowable values for each attribute

Download the Item Class Template

Navigate to the Products > Product Mgmt > Bulk section of the Seller Portal.  Once there, in Step 2: Browse Catalog by Item Class, you are able to select an item class specific template.

You will find 3 tabs within the Item Class template.

Data Definition – this tab provides the data requirements for the fields listed on the Data Format tab.  Please read this to understand the data validations and values allowed.

Data Format – this is the tab where the item information is placed (following the validations mentioned in the Data Definition tab).

Attributes (not present in Generic template) – this would list any attributes and values that are available for the specific template that you downloaded.

Note: When using the Generic template, you will need to use the “Item Class/Attributes Mapping(for Generic Template)” file to determine what available Attribute Names & Values can be used in the attribute columns. You can add up to 30 different attributes.

Attributes are required to create variation items (same item with different size and/or color) and have them appear as a single item on the Sears.com site.   If your item is a variation item, such as a t-shirt with different sizes and colors you need to indicate this by using the Variation Group ID column with the same attributes completed for all applicable items, then select the appropriate variation attribute Names and Values. The attribute type is provided in the   “Item Class/Attributes Mapping(for Generic Template)”.  Complete at least one variation attribute field for all of the items in that Variation Group.  The variation attribute fields can be found in the far right of the template. The values you enter under attribute fields have to be listed in the attributes tab in the template.  When using the Generic template, the name for the attribute should be EXACTLY as it is listed in the “Item Class/Attributes Mapping(for Generic Template)” for our system to accept your product successfully.

Several variation attributes of the same type are available to sellers within one item class. For example an item class may have up to 4 different size variation attributes, but sellers should be using the attribute with the highest number (attribute ID) as this has the most comprehensive list of values.
